DATA COLLECTION DESCRIPTION:

The eSWua (electronic Space Weather upper atmosphere) database contains the near-real time and historical data originated from the instruments of the INGV Ionospheric Monitoring Network, and all the related scientific products developed by the "Upper atmosphere physics and radiopropagation" INGV group. This collection includes the data acquired by the GNSS receivers for TEC and scintillation monitoring; these particular instruments allow to monitor transient effects such as ionospheric scintillations by sampling the signals of the GNSS constellations in both amplitude and phase, with a frequency of at least 50Hz. The INGV scintillation network has been active since 2003 when the first instrument was installed in Svalbard (Norway). Currently, several permanent observatories placed at different latitudes, from the polar to the equatorial regions, belong to the network. The raw data, produced 24/7, are remotely processed by dedicated software and managed in near-real time by the eSWua system at the INGV headquarter. This collection makes available to the users the level-I data and products (amplitude scintillation index, phase scintillation index, Total Electron Content, scintillation maps, etc.), harmonized among the different receivers and distributed in an open format.

DATA DISTRIBUTION FORMAT:

The data on the eSWua website are distributed in JSON format.
In a nutshell, a JSON is written as key/value pairs. A key/value pair consists of a field name (the key, representing a property or a parameter), followed by a colon, followed by its value. A JSON file is easy to read (human readable) and simple to manage and consume by most of the common scientific programming languages (machine readable). Further information on JSON format may be found here.

Example of JSON file containing parameters for scintillation data from a specific GNSS satellite:
